After several years of blogging from the United States the QPR Report blog, this week, a sister QPR Report Message Board was "launched." For those interested, the board can be viewed at QPR Report Mesageboard. Hopefully the numerous North and South American QPR supporters will also join in.

The sole focus of the QPR Report Message Board is QPR matters, on and off the field; present and past; as well as possibly a limited focus on broader Football ("soccer!") concerns. Nothing else.

QPR Report Message Board is open to all QPR supporters. Its operating premise is that supporting QPR is what we all have in common and is the reason for why people are on the board. There is no "official" message board perspective regarding QPR matters. Critics, skeptics, defenders, and boosters; and everyone in between, are all very welcome to participate. It is anticipated - or at least hoped - that this will be a forum bereft of ad-hominem attacks and slurs; where other peoples' perspectives will be tolerated, if not always agreed with; and where people actually live out the well-worn cliche: "To disagree without being disagreeable."

Ex-Chicago Fire's Matt Pickens Released by QPR

QPR quintet Sean Thomas, Aaron Goode, Andrew Howell, Stefan Bailey and Matt Pickens will be free to leave the Club when their current contracts expire at the end of June.
Thomas, who failed to make a single competitive appearance for the R's, spent time on loan at Bristol City last season, while Goode featured for Wealdstone earlier this campaign.
Howell made his one and only QPR appearance against Northampton Town in the League Cup in August 2006, while tough tackling midfielder Bailey was restricted to just 20 appearances for the R's since signing professional terms during the 2005/06 campaign.
Pickens joined the R's on a short-term contract in February, but was restricted to just a handful of Reserve appearances.
The Club would like to thank all five players for their contribution to QPR and wish them all the best for a successful future. QPR

On a freezing afternoon in December, Matt Pickens sat inside a restaurant in the West Loop discussing his upcoming season with the Fire. He talked about his chances of being named team captain and he mentioned he was trying to get more teammates to train at Toyota Park in the off-season.
Sure, Pickens still hadn't re-signed with the team at that point, but he was confident he would be signing soon.
That day never came.
Pickens instead signed with England's Queens Park Rangers in February.
"I thought I would be with the Fire," Pickens said. "But I got a good offer from Europe. Offers from Europe don't come often. If I didn't get any offers from Europe, I would [have been] in a Fire jersey this weekend."
Pickens was training with the U.S. national team in January but left camp early to train with Norwich City and then Preston North End—also of the Football League Championship. According to Pickens, both clubs later made him an offer, but not until he was already set to sign with QPR.
The Fire made one final offer the night before January's draft. As he did before the 2007 season when the Fire tried to extend his contract, Pickens declined.
"It was generous," Pickens said of the offer. "I respected that and I told them that. But I had to live a dream."
QPR's season ended Sunday, with the Rangers finishing 14th out of 24 clubs. Pickens was unable to crack the starting lineup in his time with QPR but played three reserve games with the club. He missed the final three weeks of the season after suffering a separated shoulder in practice.
"I knew I would come in as the No. 2 guy," Pickens said. "I was perfectly fine with that. I didn't expect to start.
"I think I played well, but I still haven't proven myself."
Would he like to return to QPR next season?
"I hope so," responded Pickens, whose contract ended after the season. "I think I can play at that level, but we'll see what happens." Chicago Tribune

Crew survive Chivas comeback - Columbus withstands late rally to earn home victory By Nathan Linton / MLSnet.com Staff

COLUMBUS -- After seeing Chivas USA storm back from a two-goal deficit late in the second half, Robbie Rogers' second goal of the game gave the Columbus Crew a wild 4-3 victory against Chivas USA at a cold Crew Stadium on Saturday night.
A 2-1 Crew lead at halftime exploded over the final 20 minutes when Rogers doubled the lead. But Jesse Marsch scored barely a minute later, then Paulo Nagamura tied the game, before Rogers whistled a drive from well outside the area through Brad Guzan's hands in the Chivas goal for the game-winner.

Chivas finished the game with nine men after Marsch and Francisco Mendoza were sent off right after the fourth Crew goal.

Chivas started the game with a couple of key components of their attack, as forwards Ante Razov and Alecko Eskandarian did not make the trip to Columbus due to injury.

Still, Chivas nearly struck first in the 12th minute when a bouncing through ball split the center of the Crew defense. Rookie Keith Savage, making his professional debut, ran on to the ball and would have likely netted his first MLS goal had Crew 'keeper Will Hesmer not charged out of the net and deflected the shot out of bounds.

Lighting problems delayed the game minutes later when several banks of the stadium lights went out, leaving the north end of the field much darker than the south, but after a brief conference both teams decided to continue play.

After the delay Chivas had another good opportunity on goal when Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven received a yellow card for a harsh tackle 25 yards from goal. The Chivas restart was headed back out of the box but defender Jonathan Bornstein hit a lob from 20 yards -- nearly catching Hesmer off his line, overshooting the goal by inches.

In the 25th minute the Crew drew first blood. Rogers raced down the left wing and sent a rolling cross into the middle of the box. Chivas defender Jim Curtin was tracking back to cover Alejandro Moreno and when the two collided referee Ricardo Salazar blew his whistle and pointed to the penalty spot. Guillermo Barros Schelotto stepped to the spot and drove the ball up the center of the goal past a diving Guzan.

The lead didn't last long however. Bornstein played the ball to Savage's feet 25 yards from goal, and the rookie turned and laid the ball off to a streaking Kljestan. He hit a curling shot that rocketed off his foot and never strayed off course, finding the upper right corner of the Crew goal.

Yet only two minutes later the Crew again took the lead. On the counterattack after a pass was broken up in midfield by Brian Carroll, Moreno played the ball into space ahead of Schelotto. Schelotto held the ball for a moment and as Guzan came out of his net, the Argentinean rolled a pass to his left where Moreno had continued his run. He kept his shot low and hard, finding the back of the net for the second time this year for a 2-1 lead in the 35th minute.

After the break, the Crew began to pile on the pressure, and in the 63rd minute nearly struck again. From some 25 yards straight out from goal, Adam Moffat hit a knuckling blast that never rose more than a foot off the ground, but was aimed dead center at the Chivas goal. Guzan seemed to be caught off guard, able only to kick out the shot at the last instant with his left leg.

Columbus finally broke through in the 71st minute. After Rogers made a hustling save to keep the ball inbounds and maintain possession for the Crew he was rewarded. Schelotto found Rogers racing down the left side, barely beating the offside trap. Rogers controlled the ball before slipping it inside Guzan and the near post for a 3-1 Crew lead.

Before Columbus could even finish celebrating the goal Chivas had answered. The Red-and-White beat a Columbus attempt at an offside trap when Paulo Nagumura split the Crew defense and put a pass right into the path of Jesse Marsch, who raced in alone on Hesmer and slotted it home.

Chivas then drew even in the 78th minute. Kljestan slipped the ball square to Nagamura outside the top of the arc, and the Brazilian hit a left-footed curling ball that again beat Hesmer as he dove to his right, flying into the upper corner of the net.

But the Crew took just four minutes to respond yet again. Danny O'Rourke sent a long ball out of the Crew half over a Chivas defender, directly to the chest of Rogers. Again he let fly from long range and the ball sailed right through the hands of Guzan though it was hit almost directly at him and the Crew were in the lead for the third time on the night.

Things got a bit chippy after that however. Mendoza committed a harsh foul right in front of referee Salazar, who immediately reached into his pocket and sent off the Chivas midfielder with a second caution in the game.

Immediately after the restart Kljestan committed another hard foul, and this time Salazar showed a straight red card for the tackle.

This time the way back was too far for Chivas, and for the first time ever Columbus had defeated the 2005 expansion team on their home field.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Crew announced today that it has signed Argentine left back Gino Padula. Per club and league policy, no further terms of the deal were disclosed. Padula will join the Crew upon approval of his P-1 visa work permit.

The 31-year-old Padula trained with the Crew during its recent preseason trip to England and appeared in the club's exhibition match vs. Everton FC on March 7.

"We have been looking for an experienced left back are were able to find one in Gino Padula," said Crew head coach Sigi Schmid. "He is a good technical player with a great deal of experience in the English and French leagues and he adds another veteran presence to our back line."

Padula began his career with Argentine club Atl鴩co River Plate in 1996, before moving to Club Atl鴩co Huracᮠin 1997. In 1998, he moved to Europe to play for Xerez CD in Spain. Following his time with Xerez, Padula played in English football between 1999 and 2006.

His first club in England was Bristol Rovers, and after a short spell there, he went on to Walsall FC where he appeared in 25 games before joining Wigan Athletic in 2000. Padula saw action in six games, scoring one goal for the Latics, before heading to Queen's Park Rangers in 2002. Padula became a cult figure during his time at Loftus Road, where he scored five goals in 90 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops. After his time with QPR, Padula joined Nottingham Forest in 2005, where he made five appearances with the Reds. He most recently played with Montpellier HSC of the French Ligue 2, where he made seven appearances.

Rangers Reserves drew 1-1 with Southampton in a thoroughly entertaining Pontin's Holidays Combination League fixture at Loftus Road this evening (Tuesday).
The hosts took the lead early in the first half through Angelo Balanta, but the Saints drew level shortly after when Cedric Baseya headed home from six yards.
The R's can be grateful to debut-boy Matt Pickens for ensuring a share of the spoils, as the Rangers keeper pulled off three stunning point-blank saves after the break to keep the visitors at bay.
Pickens, yet to feature for the First Team following his recent arrival on a short-term contract until the end of the season, frustrated Southampton with some excellent stops, most notably in the closing minutes to deny Matthew Paterson who looked to have scored on the half-volley from 12 yards.
The Rangers keeper was equal to it, however, and brought rapturous applause for his stop from the South Africa Road Stand.
QPR took the lead on seven minutes when Terry Smith - who worked tirelessly in the middle of the park alongside Matt O'Brien - slid a perfect through ball for the on-rushing Balanta.
The Colombian forward made no mistake with just Saints keeper Matej Rondos to beat, as he coolly found the bottom corner from 16 yards.
Unfortunately the hosts' lead was short-lived. Southampton worked an excellent opening with some slick one-touch football before Josh Dutton-Black picked out Cedric Baseya with a pin-point delivery from the left wing.
The latter gave Pickens no chance, as he stooped to head home the equaliser from close range.
As the half wore on, it was the visitors who looked the more likely to add to their tally, and on 33 minutes they would have done so but for an excellent stop from Pickens to deny Baseya from distance.
After the break, it was end-to-end action as both sides, to their credit, looked for the winner.
Balanta went close twice, but pulled his efforts wide, while substitute Aaron Morgan saw his shot from a tight angle deflected away for a corner.
At the other end, Pickens was the star of the show as he did his best to keep the Saints out. And when he was beaten from eight yards following a goal-mouth scramble, Billy Coyne was on hand to clear off the line.
Romone Rose nearly won it in the closing stages with what would have been a stunning solo effort.
After picking the ball up in the right-back position, Rose raced the length of the field before firing his effort just wide of the far post.

Another Former QPR Player Coming to America: Gino Padula

Fomer QPR favourite, Gino Padula, is reportedly joining Columbus Crew.

Sports Network - Crew to sign left back Pedula [sic]
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew are in the process of signing Argentine left back Gino Padula, according to head coach Sigi Schmid.
"We are bringing in a guy named Gino Pedula, we are trying to get that transfer done," he told sportsnetwork.com.
Padula is a 31-year-old defender who most recently played for Montpellier of the French Second Division. Pedula has played domestically in Argentina for River Plate as well as stints with Wigan, Queens Park Rangers and Nottingham Forest in England during his career.
"I was trying to find a left back, we feel that plugs a hole that we had a little bit back there," Schmid said. Sports Network

Championship team Queens Park Rangers have completed the signing of free agent goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
Pickens, 25, who refused overtures from Chicago Fire after his deal expired on December 31st, also trialed with Norwich City and Preston North End before settling with the Londoners.
"Pickens has joined us until the end of the season," a spokesperson for QPR Press Officer Ian Taylor confirmed to YA. "He performed well in a brief showing for us, and he will now be with us until June."
"Both parties will evaluate a potential extension after the season."

The Colorado Rapids announced today that JUERGEN SOMMER has been named the team’s Director of Soccer and GARY SMITH has been added to the club as an Assistant Coach.
In his newly-created position, Sommer will work closely with the coaching staff and General Manager Charlie Wright on scouting, the Rapids youth academy, and operational aspects of the club in accordance with MLS rules and guidelines. The Rapids will also see the benefits of Sommer’s addition, as he will work directly with the first team goalkeepers...
“Juergen’s and Gary’s backgrounds as coaches and players will prove to be valuable assets to our team and our business,” said Rapids Managing Director Jeff Plush.
“With the contributions they will make to our on-pitch performance as part of our technical staff, we are a better club with their additions. As importantly, both are quality individuals who are committed to helping us reach our stated goal of becoming a premier team.”
A former NCAA Goalkeeper of the Year, Sommer has spent the last two years working as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Indiana University. He also has recently served as the goalkeeper coach for the U.S. Men's National Team. Sommer earned 10 international caps with the U.S. National Team from 1990 to 1998. Following his playing career at Indiana, Sommer signed with Luton Town of the English First Division in 1991. He led Luton Town to the FA Cup semifinals in 1993 and was named the English goalkeeper of the year that season.
In 1995, he became the first American goalkeeper to play in the English Premier League when he suited up for Queens Park Rangers. Sommer returned to the U.S. and played in the MLS from 1998-2002 with the Columbus Crew and New England Revolution. He played 54 games in his MLS career, making 249 saves. Sommer was named to the All-Star team his final year in MLS. While with the Revolution, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Harvard University. Sommer was the 1990 NCAA adidas Goalkeeper of the Year and led the 1988 IU team to an NCAA Championship.
Smith comes to the Rapids with ten years of experience as a professional player and full-time coach in the English FA. A UEFA “A” badge holder, he recently served as the reserve team coach for English Premier League’s Watford Football Club. Smith’s background also includes coaching with Wycombe Wanderers Football Club and Wimbledon Football Club, both located in London, England, throughout the past decade. Colorado Rapids

Queens Park Rangers Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of American goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
The 25 year-old custodian has joined the R's on a short-term contract until June 2008.
Pickens, whose contract at MLS side Chicago Fire expired at the end of December, expressed his delight at the move, commenting: "It's a big challenge for me.
"I've heard a lot about the tradition here. The Club has an extensive history and it is a big privilege for me to be here.
"I am here to add competition for places in the goalkeeping department. I'm not the kind of goalkeeper who will be content with being a number two, but we'll have to wait and see what happens."
The US stopper, who measures in at 6'3'', believes a move to the UK could prove to be the launch-pad for his international career, adding: "I've been in two squads recently, but I didn't feel I was getting a real shot at it over there.
"Moving to QPR could enhance my chances and I am relishing the challenge that lies ahead." QPR

Matt Pickens has signed with Queens Park Rangers of the Championship, according to a source with the Fire. Pickens was out of contract with the Fire and spent the last few weeks in England on trial with different clubs.
With Pickens gone, the remaining goalkeepers on the Fire roster are Jon Busch and Nick Noble. The Fire recently drafted Tulsa goalkeeper Dominic Cervi with the No. 12 pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, though he has yet to sign with the team. Report

In our latest instalment of exclusive interviews on www.qpr.co.uk, former R's boss Gordon Jago comes under the spotlight.

Gordon Jago - 1971-1974
Gordon Jago laid the early foundations for the greatest team in the history of Queens Park Rangers Football Club.
Jago was Manager at Loftus Road from 1971 to 1974. In that time, he built a side that eventually went on to compete with the best in the land.
He said: "It was the happiest period of my career. I took great pleasure from working with the QPR players and I always enjoyed the quality of their play.
"The key to our advancement was the sale of Rodney Marsh in March 1972. We didn't want him to leave, but it was Rodney's choice and he wished to join Manchester City. Fortunately, my Chairman Jim Gregory negotiated a marvellous transfer deal and we got £200,000 clear, which was a large sum of money to rebuild with in those days.
"There was a certain kind of player that was attractive to me. I always went for skilful technique. I didn't favour the old fashioned, big centre-forward down the middle and crashing the ball up to him. I liked to play good football.
"We faced Carlisle United just after Rodney left and Stan Bowles played magnificently against us at Loftus Road. I thought he would be ideal for me. A very similar type of striker to Marsh - very talented, able to beat people, a cute passer of the ball. Stan had a different type of personality, but it was still similar to Rodney's. They were both very flamboyant and I loved that.
"I had also watched Don Givens at Luton Town and Burnley's Dave Thomas. So the money we got for Rodney was used to buy Bowles, Givens and Thomas, who were three top class forwards. We didn't need a lot of new faces as we had some really promising youngsters coming through in Gerry Francis, Dave Clement and Ian Gillard.
"And when I got my final X1 together, from Clement at right-back all the way over to Thomas at outside-left, they could each play passing football. They were happy with the ball and had good touch. There were some great characters and we won promotion to the top flight in 1972/73."
Jago eventually left the R's in October 1974 after a disagreement behind the scenes. But he took immense pride as the Rangers success story continued with Dave Sexton in charge.
"You didn't have to be too clever to know that we had assembled a good squad," said Jago.
"In my first year up in the First Division, we finished eighth. We matched everybody and beat Arsenal and Chelsea for the first time in our history.
"We had a nice blend of experience - like McLintock and Venables - along with the younger element. So it was a perfect position for me as a manager. I felt that the next stage would be the upper echelons of the table and perhaps European football.
"Then unfortunately I fell out with Jim Gregory. It was the most disappointing day of my life when I resigned. It was a hellish decision for me to make.
"So when I walked away, I realised that I wasn't going to have the opportunity to fulfil my dream at Loftus Road. We'd started something, we'd built an excellent team and we'd gone a long way towards where we were aiming.
"I always knew that Rangers were going to be a top side. Of course the season after I departed, they finished runners-up in the League by a point to Liverpool and then went on a superb UEFA Cup run.
"Years afterwards as QPR sustained their status at the highest level, I was able to quietly say to myself 'I had a little bit to do with that.' It was nice to see Rangers become firmly established as a strong club."
Jago has since had a long coaching career in America. Despite being old enough to draw his pension, he still reports for work every day.
"I came out in 1978 so I've been here 30 years. I had six seasons as coach of Tampa Bay Rowdies before joining the Dallas Sidekicks, where I stayed in charge for 18 years. After that, I became Commissioner of the World Indoor Soccer League for three years.
"Nowadays, I am Executive Director of the Dallas Cup, which is the most prestigious youth soccer tournament in the world. I bring in 184 teams from all over the globe. We've had Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea here in recent times.
"I'm 75 years old now and my current role has enabled me to renew a great deal of my old football friendships. Often when I put the phone down after speaking to people over in England, I'm almost certain they say 'I didn't know he was still alive!'
"I'm still having great fun in soccer. I've been very lucky and I've had great health. My wife June has recovered from cancer so we are very blessed.
"And my blood has always been blue and white for QPR. It has been disappointing to see that the club has not enjoyed good fortune in recent years. But let's hope that the new owners can turn it around and put the Hoops where they should be back up in the Premier League." QPR

With the MLS combine and SuperDraft fast approaching, the Chicago Fire still plan to announce the hiring of a new head coach by week's end.
And his name won't be John Spencer.
Spencer, the Dynamo's assistant coach for the past two MLS championship seasons, said Wednesday night he rejected an offer to become the Fire's head coach because the pay was not up to par.
"(Tuesday) I got offered the job in Chicago, accepted it and sat down to try and negotiate a contract, but we couldn't come to terms,'' Spencer said. "It wasn't much more money than I (was making) here with the Dynamo, and I felt that to move my family to another state and all the upheaval and such, I just didn't think it was worth it, so I turned it down.''
Spencer declined to go into details of the offer or his salary, but said he will be signing a one-year extension with the Dynamo today.
"Another piece of the puzzle for '08 has fallen into place,'' Dynamo chief operating officer Chris Canetti said. "We're more than happy to have (Spencer) back, although at some level, personally, sorry for him that he wasn't able to get his first head-coaching job, which will happen some day.''
Spencer was a finalist for the job vacated by Juan Carlos Osorio last month, along with longtime Fire assistant Denis Hamlett, who now appears in line for a promotion.
Osorio, who coached the Fire to an impressive turnaround since arriving in July, left to sign with the New York Red Bulls.
Reports last week also had former Dallas Burn assistant and current Duke assistant Mike Jeffries in the hunt for the position.
Turning down the offer was a no-brainer for the former Scottish international and MLS star.
"I value myself a lot more than what they offered,'' said Spencer, who was interviewed multiple times. "They obviously felt I was the right guy for the job and offered me the position, so I must have done something right in the interviews, because I sure had enough of them.
"Things happen.''

CHICAGO — The Chicago Fire promoted longtime assistant Denis Hamlett to head coach Friday, ending a long search to find a successor to Juan Carlos Osorio.
Hamlett, a 39-year-old Costa Rican, is the Fire's fourth coach. He had been an assistant since the Fire's inaugural 1998 season.
"I'm excited to have an opportunity to take my career to the next level with the team I started with 11 years ago," he said. "There is no other place I'd rather have this opportunity with than the Fire."
Hamlett served as interim coach after Dave Sarachan was fired in midseason, but instead of getting a promotion at the time, he got passed over.
The Fire hired Osorio and went 6-3-7, going from last place in the Eastern Conference to within one game of the MLS Cup after a season as manager at Millonarios in Colombia. The arrival of Mexican star Cuauhtemoc Blanco in July helped turn around the season, but Osorio left abruptly a month ago to coach the New York Red Bulls.
"The goal from the beginning was to make sure we got the right guy, and if it took a little bit extra time to do that, then so be it," Fire president and general manager John Guppy said. "We have the right guy."
Hamlett's promotion came after Houston Dynamo assistant coach John Spencer reportedly accepted and rejected the job. Spencer told the Houston Chronicle that the Fire offered the position on Tuesday, and he initially decided to take it. He then turned it down because the pay wasn't enough. Gordon Jago: Thirty-seven years ago yesterday: January 9, 1971 - the Gordon Jago Revolution began with a 0-0 draw at Luton:. A few days previously, Les Allen had been fired as manager, and Coach Gordon Jago had been appointed Caretaker manager....and after a few weeks, he was appointed till the end of the season. Jago of course, prior to QPR was coaching in the United States. And, after managing QPR and Millwall, he returned to the United, where he coached Tampa Bay Rowdies and Rodney Marsh. Gordon Jago's QPR, in their first season back in the old Division One - and in only their second-ever season in the First Division - travelled to Dave Sexton's "Mighty" Chelsea. And got a draw: 0-0. (Chelsea just prior to the game had transfer listed Peter Osgood and Alan Hudson - QPR should have bought Hudson,like they were linked to.)

Tuesday, January 15 1974 - FA Cup Third Round Replay
A classic headed goal by Stanley Bowles sent Rangers rampaging into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.

This replay was necessary after the sides drew 0-0 at Stamford Bridge. The R's dominated that first game and went closest to scoring when a Gerry Francis penalty was pushed away by Chelsea keeper John Phillips.

With the miners' strike and three day week in operation, the floodlights could not be used at Loftus Road. So the re-match was scheduled for a lunchtime 1.30pm start on Tuesday, January 8. However, after heavy rain the day before, match referee Mr David Smith of Gloucestershire called the tie off less than two hours before the planned kick-off.

QPR then moved quickly to advise spectators of the waterlogged pitch. Within seven minutes of the ref's decision, Rangers had notified the local radio stations, the two London evening papers, the press agencies and television companies. In addition, local police arranged for 'Match Postponed' boards to be displayed at all tube and railway stations en route to the ground.

The fixture was subsequently rearranged for seven days later - again with a 1.30pm Tuesday billing. This was a mild, sunny day but the pitch was very heavy and greasy. And a bumper crowd of 28,715 packed into Loftus Road.

Rangers were fifth in the top flight at the time with Chelsea languishing in 17th spot. The visitors' line-up included John Hollins and David Webb, who were both later destined to move to QPR along with their manager Dave Sexton.

The Super Hoops dominated the replay for long spells on a multi-speckled mud heap of a surface. Frank McLintock had a goal disallowed early on. Then Don Givens sent in a powerful header which squirmed under keeper Phillips but it was hacked off the line by Chelsea defender Marvin Hinton.

We finally made the vital breakthrough on 63 minutes. Dave Thomas dwelt on the ball and then tickled it through to overlapping full-back Dave Clement. He made a brilliant, buccaneering run down the right before crossing for Stan Bowles to nod home in emphatic fashion.

It took the 'Pensioners' 82 minutes to win their first corner. Although they came close to snatching a late and undeserved equaliser. David Webb, who was playing as a makeshift centre-forward, pounced on to a loose clearance and volleyed the ball left footed against the crossbar.

Bowles was stretchered off in the final seconds with a gash on his ankle and a badly bruised calf. This followed a crunching tackle by Chelsea's Ron 'Chopper' Harris, who had already been booked for an earlier challenge on the R's number 10. Harris could well have been sent off it the referee had seen the second incident.

Despite this setback, Rangers held firm to register a first ever victory against our close rivals in a recognised competitive fixture. However, the celebrations at the final whistle were subdued due to an outbreak of serious hooliganism by the Chelsea fans who had been standing at the Loft end.

Wearing their trademark uniform of laced up Dr Martens boots and white flared trousers, they surged forward to demolish the wall that formed a boys' enclosure at the front of the terrace. One spectator was injured in the crush. Then the visitors' supporters stormed through a line of police and on to the playing area in a bid to pull down the goalposts.

R's secretary Ron Phillips told newspapers: "The Loft terrace wall did not give way under pressure. It was deliberate vandalism. It was kicked and pushed down by the Chelsea fans as they tried to get on to the pitch in their disappointment at losing."

Concentrating on the football, Rangers first team coach Steve Burtenshaw said afterwards: "Our team did very well under what was, at times, provocation by Chelsea's robust play. There were some very harsh tackles indeed.

"The conditions were bad but we proved that it is possible to play pure football on any surface if you have the skill. I always felt that the goal would come."

Veteran QPR defender Frank McLintock added: "Stan Bowles is in such a relaxed frame of mind that he played in this tense replay against Chelsea as he does in five-a-side games.

"Stan stopped the ball, shielded it and then threaded it through opponents' legs! You might have imagined that we were in a practise session rather than facing one of the top teams in the country before a 28,000 partisan crowd!"

In his match report in the Sun newspaper, Bob Driscoll wrote: "Bruised...battered...but on top of the world. That's Stan Bowles, the new king of West London...Chelsea have dominated West London for a long time but the crown has been snatched from them by QPR."

FA - Nothing to lose Chelsea v Queens Park Rangers
Queens Park Rangers playmaker Akos Buzsaky is preparing himself for something of a reunion this weekend, as the Championship side make the short trip to face FA Cup holders Chelsea in the Third Round.
The Hungarian midfielder has a number of links with the Stamford Bridge outfit, having started his career under Chelsea’s First Team Coach Henk ten Cate at MTK Hungaria, before playing alongside the likes of Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira following a move to FC Porto, then managed by former Blues chief Jose Mourinho.
Buzsaky only signed a permanent deal with Rangers this week, after enjoying a successful loan spell from Plymouth Argyle and quickly becoming a crowd favourite at Loftus Road thanks to his skilful displays and six goals, which have made him the Hoops’ top scorer.
The 25-year-old is now relishing the chance to be reunited with his old boss ten Cate (pictured above), who gave him his first professional contract, and line up against both Ferreira and Carvalho on Saturday.
"Henk brought me up and gave me my first professional contract when I was 17,” revealed Buzsaky.
“We know each other well and I worked with him for many years.
"I also used to play with Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira, so I know people at Chelsea and I'm looking forward to seeing them.
"I wasn't surprised that Ricardo and Paulo made it to Chelsea. When we were at Porto, they weren't big players - it was the year they won the UEFA Cup.
"But they improved a lot and in two years they went on to become some of the best players in Europe."
With Rangers currently in the lower reaches of the Championship and Chelsea riding high in the top flight, many will see the result as a foregone conclusion, but with the feel-good factor that is seemingly in place at Loftus Road due to a recent takeover and investment and subsequent improvement in form, Buzsaky is bullish about their chances.
"We’re going there to relax and to try and play good football, and anything can happen,” he added.
“We don’t have anything to lose. Chelsea are one of the best clubs in the world and if you have the opportunity to play against them, it’s unbelievable.

Akos Buzsaky is relishing this weekend's FA Cup encounter with Premiership big-guns Chelsea.
The Hungarian, who signed a permanent deal with the R's yesterday, knows it won't be easy at Stamford Bridge and says that it will take a lot of hard work and time before we are in a position to challenge with the country's elite week in, week out.
"It's too early to compare ourselves with Chelsea," Buzsaky told www.qpr.co.uk.
"They are an established Premiership Club, and have one of the best squads in the world.
"But it's great to have the chance to play against them."
Rangers are enjoying a rich vein of form in the Championship, picking up back-to-back wins against Watford and Leicester City, and 25 year-old Buzsaky believes that is what the R's need to concentrate on.
"The main thing for us, and the main focus, is the League," he said.
"We want to go forward step by step."
Buzsaky has found the back of the net six times for the R's since his initial loan switch from Plymouth, but he is quick to point out that it takes more than a goal-scorer to win matches.
"Football is a team sport and I don't want to be selfish by talking about how many goals I want to score this season," he said.
"It is always nice to score, but the most important thing is to win matches. Personally speaking, goals are a bonus."QPR

John Byrne knows a thing or two about beating Chelsea, so how can his former club QPR somehow overcome them in their FA Cup third-round encounter?
"Pick me and Gary Bannister!" he jokingly told BBC Sport.
"'Banno' and I probably couldn't run for a bus now. But we loved playing against Chelsea, that's for sure."
They certainly did.
Bannister netted two hat-tricks against them for QPR, one of them in a 6-0 mauling of the Blues at Loftus Road in 1986, in which Byrne scored twice.
It will remain QPR's greatest victory over their neighbours unless the current team achieves the unthinkable on Saturday.
Weeks before the six-goal demolition of a title-chasing Chelsea side, Byrne also hit the net in a League Cup quarter-final tussle with them, which Rangers won in a replay on their way to the final.
"The cup game was great itself but the 6-0 win a few weeks later was amazing and thinking about it brings back great memories," said Byrne.
"We tore them to shreds. Doug Rougvie, who was playing at centre-back for Chelsea, was a fearsome player and he was absolutely furious. By the end, Doug was looking for blood.
"We had the Milk Cup final coming up a couple of weeks later. Banno and me didn't want to get injured so having destroyed Chelsea, we spent the last part of the match avoiding Doug, who was an angry man.
"We stayed away from him. Banno went to play on one wing and I went and played on the other!
"It was an unbelievable game to play in. We just played so, so well and everything we did came off. They couldn't handle us that day."
Byrne's tormenting of Chelsea was not confined to his QPR days.
The former Republic of Ireland forward's equaliser for Sunderland in an FA Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge in 1992 took the tie to a replay.
Sunderland, then a Second Division team, won the return match and went on to face Liverpool in the final.
"I always seemed to do well against Chelsea," Byrne recalled.
"I scored for QPR at Stamford Bridge one year and of course there was the goal for Sunderland. I did seem to have the Indian sign over Chelsea when I played against them.
"Games between QPR and Chelsea used to be great and the atmosphere was brilliant - especially at Loftus Road.
"The ground is so tight with the crowd practically on top of you and you can't beat the place for atmosphere.
"They were great days for Rangers and I've some great memories of my time there."
Byrne's swagger and his strike partnership with Bannister formed part of an era in which QPR were often west London's leading club.

For the best part of two decades they fared better than their counterparts from SW6 and put them to the sword on a number of occasions.
Rangers finished above Chelsea in 15 of the 22 seasons prior to their relegation from the top division in 1996.
How times have changed.
This weekend the two clubs meet in the FA Cup, 12 years after Chelsea won a third-round clash 2-1 against a QPR side on their way to relegation from the top flight.
Since losing their Premiership status, Rangers have been in - and almost returned to - administration and the third tier of English football, suffering a multitude of problems on and off the pitch.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have grown into one of Europe's top clubs, taking on the likes of Barcelona and AC Milan while QPR have faced the likes of Chesterfield and Wrexham.
The gulf between the clubs is currently massive and Saturday's game has the makings of a mismatch.
The hope for Rangers is that the gap is about to close and that the recent takeover by Formula One magnates Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore, followed by further investment from steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, will help them become an established Premier League club again.
"I feel really sad to see QPR down there," said Byrne.

"I know some of their fans will hate going to Chelsea as the plucky underdogs. A few years back you'd never have thought that would happen.
"QPR have never been a massive club like Chelsea but they were always associated with good teams and good football.
"That was the case before my time, when they had Stan Bowles and other great players, and after that in the early 1990s.
"I'd love to see them get back where they belong and hopefully with the investment, they can do it.
"You need that investment to not just get to the Premier League but to stay there. You have to spend and keep spending these days and hopefully QPR will now be able to do that.
"You have to say it's going to be very difficult for them on Saturday because Chelsea are a great side.
"But come on, this is the FA Cup and anything can happen. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for them." BBC

YEOVIL Town midfielder Marc Bircham will be hoping for a better 2008 after describing the past 12 months as the worst he has ever experienced as a footballer.
Bircham, who is just coming back to near first-team action following a lengthy injury lay-off which has seen him to yet make his League One debut for Yeovil since arriving at the club from QPR in the summer, said on his own personal website that it had not been the best of years for him.
"In fact, it has probably been my worst ever year in football and I haven't played a full game since January," he said.
"In a way a broken leg or knee ligaments would have been better because at least then you have a definite period when you know you'll be off.
"I've had operations and false starts and it's all been very stressful. It's like Groundhog Day and there were times when my head was all over the place.
My family, friends and the club have all been supportive and without that and my own mental toughness I'm not sure I would have made it

JAY DEMERIT described the team's performance at the start of the match on Saturday as "fantastic" despite Watford going on to lose 4-2 at home to QPR.
The Hornets were 3-0 down at half-time and goals from Damien Francis and Danny Shittu could not prevent another defeat at Vicarage Road. The reverse leaves Watford without a win at home for seven matches dating back to October 20.
But the Watford skipper said: "I felt for the first 20 minutes we were fantastic. I don't think they even got in our half. When they did they got a penalty and had the advantage. And unfortunately for us we found ourselves again in that situation where we are down.
At the moment we are finding it hard to come back from those. It's disappointing but there is obviously a long season left to play.
"It was funny. You look at that, we lost 4-2, but we totally dominated the game. They scored their four goals in their first five shots. We bombarded them and created all the chances but they scored the goals. But that's football sometimes.
"Sometimes balls don't bounce your way, and things like that happen. It was kind of an eerie feeling, it's not like we came in and had been played off the park. It was exactly the opposite."... Harrow Times
